“A fierce fire, imagine that!” the old woman chuckled, shaking her head as she gazed towards the Kyoetsu Bridge. “They say the flames danced higher than the tallest trees, right over there where the Fushimi Magistrate’s Office stood.” We are gathered now in front of the 教如上人廟所跡 伏見御堂 Plaque, a monument to a tumultuous past. The plaque tells the story of the Fushimi Mido, a temple more commonly known as the Fushimi Godo. The story begins with a Buddhist monk named Kyonyo. Kyonyo, the eldest son of Kennyo, the 11th abbot of the Hongwanji Temple, sought to establish his own lineage. He received land from the powerful shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and founded the Higashi Honganji Temple, splitting the Hongwanji following. Kyonyo built the Hall of Amida, the main audience chamber, and the Shiro shoin complex. But his plans for a grander legacy were tragically cut short. A great earthquake in 1596 leveled the main halls. Reconstruction began immediately, but a fire in 1617 swept through the compound, reducing the nearly completed buildings to ashes. This site, marked by the 教如上人廟所跡 伏見御堂 Plaque, stands as a testament to Kyonyo’s ambition and the relentless forces of nature that forever altered the course of his vision.
