In 1919, amidst the bustling energy of Guangzhou, a sanctuary began to rise. This sanctuary, the Savior Church, became a beacon of faith and resilience. Let’s step back in time to witness its remarkable journey. The Savior Church, originally established by the Church of England, stands proudly on Wanfu Road. Its story intertwines with the growth of Christianity in Guangzhou. In 1903, Mo Zengshou, one of the first Chinese Bishops, embarked on his pastoral work in the city. This laid the groundwork for the church’s future. Construction of the Savior Church commenced in 1919, culminating in its dedication in 1921. The church’s impressive floor area spans 1,600 square meters.

The Savior Church’s history took a dramatic turn in 1960. Several local churches, representing diverse denominations, merged with it. These included Baptists, Methodists, Assemblies of God, and Seventh-day Adventists. However, the Cultural Revolution brought a period of turmoil. Church activities were halted, and the building fell under the control of external organizations. Despite these challenges, the Savior Church’s spirit remained unbroken.

In 1985, under the leadership of Pastor Li Dehui, the Savior Church reopened its doors. It marked a significant moment, becoming the fifth Protestant church to reopen in Guangzhou. Today, the Savior Church continues to serve as a vital spiritual hub. It offers multiple services every Sunday, catering to different groups. Morning services cater to older members. Noon services, conducted in Cantonese, engage the youth. Evening services provide a space for reflection and community.

The Savior Church’s resilience reflects its enduring importance. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith of the community it serves. The Savior Church, a historic landmark on Wanfu Road, welcomes all who seek solace and spiritual connection. It stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance. Its story continues to unfold, enriching the tapestry of Guangzhou’s spiritual landscape.
