Could this unassuming stone plaque hold the key to a tale of faith, resilience, and a bird’s freedom? Here, marking the entrance to Saishu-ji Temple, also known as the Hōōzan Saihō-ji Temple, stands the 放鶴山 西芳寺 plaque. It hints at a deeper story woven into the very fabric of this sacred place. The Saihō-ji Temple, nestled in Kyoto’s Nishikyo Ward, is also known as the 西芳寺, or Seihō-ji Temple. It traces its roots back to 1481, its existence intertwined with the life and legacy of the revered Buddhist monk Rennyo. He gifted the land for the temple to his brother, Sōshi, a devotee who would become the temple’s first head priest. This wasn’t just a generous act though. Rennyo saw it as a way to safeguard the neighboring, larger temple, Yamashina Honzan-ji. It’s fascinating how the name 放鶴山, meaning “Mount Hōō,” is connected to a captivating anecdote about Rennyo. The story goes that while battling an illness, Rennyo found refuge here. He felt a sense of peace, a stillness that brought him solace. The sight of cranes trapped in a cage troubled him however. He uttered the words, “Set them free, let them soar (hō hō kikyō), let them hear the Dharma.” It’s said that after his words, the cranes were released. That’s how this place earned the name “Mount Hōō,” forever linked to a simple act of compassion amid adversity. This plaque is more than just a marker. It’s a testament to Rennyo’s profound influence and a tangible link to a time when faith and the natural world intertwined in the most beautiful way. His words echo through centuries, reminding us of the power of empathy and the beauty of freedom.
