Construction began in 1583 on the site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple. Hideyoshi, with a love for all things gold, incorporated the precious metal into the castle’s interior and exterior design. Osaka Castle was the largest in Japan during its time, a symbol of Hideyoshi’s ambition and power. Sadly, just a few years after his death, the castle was attacked and destroyed by Tokugawa’s forces. Rebuilt in the 1620s, Osaka Castle faced another tragedy in 1665 when its main tower was struck by lightning and burned down. Imagine the city skyline then, missing its gleaming centerpiece. The current tower we see today, a reconstruction completed in 1931, miraculously survived air raids during World War II. Further restorations in 1997 have returned Osaka Castle to its former glory.
