A tilted pagoda. That’s the first thing you notice about Baoguang Temple. It leans slightly westward. A unique feature among the many temples of Chengdu.

Baoguang Temple in Chengdu isn’t just any temple. It’s a significant historical and cultural landmark. Founded during the Tang dynasty it stands as a testament to enduring faith. It’s been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout history. The current structures blend architectural styles from various eras.

The temple’s most famous feature is its thirteen-story Sharira Stupa. Also known as the pagoda. It dates back to the Tang dynasty between 862 and 888. The upper part collapsed shortly after construction. It was restored during the Ming dynasty. However the restoration resulted in a slight westward tilt. This gives the pagoda its distinctive appearance. Each of the thirteen floors is decorated with gold-inlaid Buddha images and hanging copper bells. The interior is solid. You can’t explore it. The first floor is noticeably taller than the rest. The upper floors have upturned eaves.

Beyond the pagoda Baoguang Temple boasts an impressive Arhat Hall. It contains 518 two-meter-high clay figurines. Depicting Arhats Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Each statue is unique. The craftsmanship is extraordinary. Two notable Arhats wear imperial robes. Legend says they are modeled after Emperors Kang Xi and Qian Long. It’s said that counting the Arhats is a fun activity. Men start counting from the left women from the right. Count to your age. The expression of the Arhat you end on supposedly predicts your fortune for the year. The temple also houses a Tang dynasty sharira stupa. A Liang dynasty jade Buddha. A Shu-Han ritual bronze ding vessel. A Yuan dynasty copy of the Flower Adornment Sutra.

Baoguang Temple is more than just ancient artifacts. It’s a vibrant place of worship. A serene space for reflection. Its architecture and treasures tell the story of centuries of Buddhist devotion. It’s a place where the past comes alive. The air is thick with history and faith. You feel a sense of peace. A quiet energy that speaks volumes about the temple’s lasting legacy.

So take your time to explore Baoguang Temple. Appreciate its unique beauty. Absorb the atmosphere. Discover for yourself the magic within the walls of this historic Chengdu landmark. Remember the tilted pagoda. It’s a symbol of the temple’s resilience and enduring spirit.
