“What is Dokujuzan Johshouji?” I hear you ask. This temple, also known as Joshouji, stands nestled in Osaka’s temple district near Osaka Tenmangu. It is a serene escape amid the bustling city.

Joshouji’s story began in 1604. A priest named Zouchouin Nicchu Shounin founded this Nichiren Buddhist temple. He had ties to the esteemed Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Zouchouin Nicchu Shounin’s connection to Hideyoshi is fascinating. His talent for waka poetry led to Hideyoshi’s patronage. Hideyoshi granted him land for the temple. More than that, Hideyoshi entrusted Joshouji with a precious statue.

This statue is of Myoken Daibosatsu. Hideyoshi prayed to it for victory in the Bunroku War. Today, it remains enshrined within Joshouji’s halls. You can still feel the weight of history here.

Later, Joshouji became the family temple of Ooishi Kuranosuke. He was the leader of the 47 Ronin. This connects it to a pivotal moment in Japanese history. The temple is also linked to the Daishoya Heiachiro Incident.

The graves of Ooishi Heihachiro and his son are here. Even now people visit to pay their respects. In 1976, the Osaka Daishoya Incident Research Association formed. It studies Ooishi Heihachiro and his legacy. The association still holds monthly lectures and field work. Joshouji remains at the heart of this historical study.

Joshouji is also a place of remembrance for unborn children. It is dedicated to the spirit of the stillborn and aborted. The second-generation Ueta Hirohata is enshrined here. Ueta Hirohata helped spread the word of Joshouji throughout the country.

Joshouji holds several annual events. In March, there is the Spring Equinox Service and the Feeding the Hungry Ghosts service. The temple commemorates Ooishi Kuranosuke every March. A memorial service is held every November for the Great Saint Nichiren.

The temple offers a Washindo Newsletter. It shares information about the temple and its activities.

Today, Joshouji offers a blend of history, spirituality, and community. It is a place where the past and present meet. A place to contemplate life’s journey. As you explore Joshouji, remember its deep roots. Remember the people who shaped its story. Feel the echoes of prayers and the weight of history.
