During the Long March \u6210\u4eff\u543e accompanied the Red Army. He established a mobile university in 1937. This university educated soldiers and party members. They fought against the Japanese during the Second Sino-Japanese War. This mobile university later became Huabei United University. \u6210\u4eff\u543e served as its President.

After the Communist victory in 1949 \u6210\u4eff\u543e continued his work in education. He helped establish Renmin University in Beijing. He later became President of Shandong University. He focused on reality and personal knowledge of the subject matter.

Despite his dedication \u6210\u4eff\u543e faced persecution during the Cultural Revolution. He was purged in 1974. He was later rehabilitated in 1978. He spent his final years as President of Renmin University.

\u6210\u4eff\u543e’s life was full of colorful stories. One anecdote tells of a criticism session. A persecutor mispronounced a word in a poem by Mao Zedong. \u6210\u4eff\u543e corrected him leading to applause.
