Tucked away in the heart of Osaka, 光明寺 (Komyo-ji Temple) stands as a quiet testament to the city’s rich history. 光明寺 isn’t just a temple. It’s a story waiting to be told. A story woven into the very fabric of Osaka. Let’s step inside the grounds of 光明寺. Notice the impressive main gate, a single-bay structure facing west toward Matsuyamachi-suji Street. This gate, known as an Ikken Yakuimon, boasts a distinctive gabled roof, tiled in the hongawara-buki style. Look up. See the intricate panel-lined ceiling, called a kagami tenjo. Admire the sculpted dragons adorning the supports. These dragons, along with the decorative tiles and closely spaced rafters, create a scene of captivating beauty. The main hall of 光明寺 sits at the heart of the temple grounds. Its architecture is irimoya-zukuri, featuring another elegant hongawara-buki roof. The entrance is enhanced by an Ikken kohai, a smaller roof placed just above the staircase. Inside, you’ll find the Gokendo, a five-bay hall. At its center are the Sankarado doors, a feature often found in halls housing Buddhist statues. 光明寺’s layout is a classic example of Jodo-sect Buddhist temple design, including outer, inner, and side chambers. While some of the temple’s joinery has been modified over time, the core structure retains its Edo period charm. North of the main hall are the temple’s living quarters, connected by a passageway. This section of 光明寺, with its white plaster walls and smoke-venting roof features, showcases a different architectural style. The entrance to the living quarters is an irimoya-zukuri structure with a tiled roof and ornately carved gables.
