Imagine standing before a temple that has been a beacon of faith for over six decades. This is the Huang Laoxian Temple Ci Hui Temple. It is located in Kuala Lumpur. More precisely it is at half mile on Peng Lai Road 2.
This temple’s story began even earlier than its official founding in 1960. In 1957 the worship of Huang Laoxian was already popular in Kuala Lumpur. This area included the Bukit Bintang area. Before the temple was formally established there were already many followers of Huang Laoxian.
Two pioneers from Kuala Lumpur visited the Huang Laoxian Temple Ci Hui Temple in Melaka. They spread word about the benefits of worshiping the pioneer teacher. This included the ability to promote oneself through immortal techniques and writing spells. Many people gathered. They sent representatives to Melaka. They invited Huang Laoxian’s Dharma founder Peng Shengjun to Kuala Lumpur. Peng Shengjun hosted services in private shops and homes.
Later Peng Shengjun ordered the construction of the Kuala Lumpur Huang Laoxian Temple Ci Hui Temple. The chairman of the temple, Hou Junwei, revealed that the temple adheres to Huang Laoxian’s teachings. They follow the ten major principles of Huang Laoxian. These principles were passed down by Peng Shengjun. The temple promotes these virtues.
Huang Laoxian’s teachings combine Taoism Buddhism and Confucianism. Taoism is represented by Taishang Laojun. Buddhism is represented by Qitian Dasheng. Confucianism is represented by Huang Laoxian. The temple worships these three deities to symbolize the union of the three teachings.
Initially the temple was located in a mining dormitory at 255 Chen Xiulian Road. As Huang Laoxian’s influence grew so did the number of followers. The original site became too small. The community decided to build a new temple.
The construction began in 1964. The temple committee and followers worked together. They successfully applied to the government for land. This land would be used for the temple. They also requested 70000 from the government for construction. In 1968 Deputy Prime Minister Dun Razak visited the temporary temple. He presented the building fund on behalf of the government.
With donations from followers and the community the temple was built. The Huang Laoxian Temple Ci Hui Temple was completed at half mile on Peng Lai Road 2. The grand opening was held on September 2 1968.
In 2018 the temple added a garden Guanyin statue and twelve zodiac statues. The Guanyin statue rotates every 30 minutes. It plays the Heart Sutra. The bottle in Guanyin’s hand sprays holy water for the public to drink.
Near the garden is a statue of Da Erbo Ye. The temple also provides free vegetarian meals to followers on the first and fifteenth of each lunar month. Since 2006 the temple has offered Chinese medicine and acupuncture services. There are four Chinese medicine practitioners. For a small fee patients can receive treatment regardless of religion or race.
Since August 2023 the temple has also housed the “Inside” food court. It opens daily. The temple earns rental income from this food court. The temple uses this income to cover expenses and assist more people in need.
The Huang Laoxian Temple Ci Hui Temple stands as a testament to faith community and service. Its long history reflects a commitment to spreading Huang Laoxian’s teachings. Its various activities promote health and well-being for all.
