Beneath the radiant Guilin sun stands Gongcheng Wumiao. It is also known as the Temple of Guan Yu. This temple honors Guan Yu a famous general of the Three Kingdoms period.

Gongcheng Wumiao has stood for around 400 years since its construction during the Ming Dynasty. Today it is recognized as a key cultural heritage site. The temple covers 2100 square meters. It sits to the right of the Gongcheng Confucian Temple on Yinshan Mountain’s southern slope.

The temple complex includes a stage a main hall a Xietian Palace a rear hall and east-west side halls. The architecture features overlapping eaves and upturned corners. The roof is decorated with floral and sculpted mud designs. These designs depict the Eight Immortals with vivid realism.

Yellow and green glazed tiles adorn the roofs. They blend seamlessly with the Confucian Temple. Together they create a shimmering effect under Yinshan Mountain.

The Gongcheng Wumiao’s stage is one of Guangxi’s best-preserved ancient stages. Except for its stone base the stage is made entirely of wood. The stone base features carved figures. The stage has carved doors windows and divine creatures. Four golden pillars support the roof.

Originally 36 water vats were placed under the stage. When performers beat drums the water vats reflected sound upward. This created resonance within the caisson amplifying the sound. The sound could travel for miles.

The stage has red walls and yellow tiles. Its roof features overlapping eaves and soaring corners. Auspicious dragons phoenixes and the Eight Immortals decorate the roof. The front and rear halls have carved beams and painted rafters.

Legend says that Gongcheng’s ancestors placed the Confucian Temple to the east. They placed Gongcheng Wumiao to the west. In ancient Chinese tradition east represented spring and life. West symbolized autumn and killing. Therefore the Confucian Temple symbolized reverence for culture. Gongcheng Wumiao represented the suppression of violence.

The placement of the temples also reflects yin and yang. It shows a balance between culture and martial spirit. The temples highlight Chinese cultural values. They value both scholarly pursuits and military prowess.

The pairing of Gongcheng’s Confucian and martial temples is unique in China. Every year on the sixteenth day of the sixth lunar month Guan Yu is honored. Gongcheng Wumiao becomes the center of grand ceremonies. It is a day of reflection. It is a day to pay tribute to a legendary figure.
