Lost in time, the 念佛石 and stone inscriptions stand as silent witnesses to Beijing’s rich history. This is the Beijing Stone Carving Museum, a genuine hidden gem. It offers a tranquil escape from the city’s bustling tourist spots.

Originally named Zhenjue Temple, construction began during the Ming Dynasty between 1403 and 1424. It was completed in 1473. An Indian monk presented Emperor Chengzu with five golden Buddha statues. He also gifted a draft of an Indian diamond throne pagoda. This inspired the temple’s unique design.

Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty renovated the temple twice. It was renamed Da Zhengjue Temple. After further renovations, it opened to the public in 1982. Today, many know it as the Five-Pagoda Temple.

The temple’s main attraction is the Indian diamond throne pagoda. Five pagodas sit atop a square foundation. This design blends Indian and Chinese architectural styles. The structure uses bricks and blue stones. The square foundation has six stories. The first story is the base. The upper five stories feature eaves. They also showcase carvings of Buddhist shrines and Sanskrit letters.

Five pagodas rise from the foundation. One stands in the center. The others occupy the corners. The central pagoda has 13 stories. The corner pagodas have 11. All are adorned with Buddha images, bodhi trees, and animal figures. Buddha footprints are carved into the central pagoda’s south wall. These symbolize Buddha’s omnipresence.

The 念佛石 and stone inscriptions provide invaluable insights into ancient Indian language. They also reveal details about Tibetan Buddhism. The Beijing Stone Carving Museum displays over 2000 stone artworks. The museum opened in 1987. It became China’s first local museum dedicated to stone carvings.

Stroll through themed sections. Discover stones from tombs, engraved stelae, and ancestral temple artifacts. Many stelae feature carvings in both Chinese and Latin. These mark the tombs of missionaries who spread Christianity and knowledge of China.

Inside the central building, explore niches filled with Buddhist statues. Discover explanations of the building’s religious significance in both Chinese and English. Appreciate the hundreds of buddhas adorning the exterior walls. Notice the repairs made after damage during the Cultural Revolution.

The Beijing Stone Carving Museum offers a unique glimpse into Beijing’s past. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and faith. The museum is located at No. 24, Five-pagoda Temple Village, Haidian District. It is open from 09:00 to 16:30, except on Mondays. A visit here promises a serene and enlightening experience.
