Amidst the vibrant energy of Osaka, find Shinkoji Temple. Shinkoji Temple, a beacon of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism. It stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. The temple’s history traces back to 1624, when it was founded by Enku Shaku Shogyoku Koji. Tragedy struck in 1923 when a fire, its cause still shrouded in mystery, consumed the main hall and the adjacent assembly hall. Priceless artifacts, including a statue of Amida Nyorai (the Buddha of Infinite Light) created by Shogyoku Taishi (Prince Shotoku) and a statue of Shozai Tennyo (Hariti), were lost to the flames. Even the eleven-faced Kannon statue within the assembly hall could not escape the inferno’s reach. But Shinkoji Temple was not abandoned. The community rallied, and in 1929, the 22nd head priest, Ryuei Jonin, oversaw the reconstruction of the main hall. This time, it was built in a striking Indo-style architecture, utilizing reinforced concrete and showcasing a steel frame. Look closely at the main hall. The dome’s base, the details above the pillars, the jewel-shaped pillars flanking the entrance, and the multitude of small arches all contribute to its distinct Indian aesthetic. Today, Shinkoji Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a cultural hub, hosting diverse events like yoga sessions, music performances, and workshops. Tucked within the temple grounds, a renovated traditional Japanese house has been transformed into “Cafe Kokoro Hikaru,” offering visitors a tranquil space for relaxation and creative pursuits.
