Hachiman. Does the name resonate? The \u5fa1\u62dd\u8336\u5c4b\u516b\u5e61\u5bae is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman. There are about 44000 Hachiman shrines. It is the second most numerous type of Shinto shrine.

The \u5fa1\u62dd\u8336\u5c4b\u516b\u5e61\u5bae is more than just a place of worship. It is steeped in history and tradition. It is a testament to Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage. Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan from 794 to 1868.

Hachiman shrines are known by several names. Originally, the name \u516b\u5e61 was read Yawata or Yahata. This reading is still used in some cases. Many towns and cities incorporate the names Hachiman, Yawata, or Yahata. They grew around these shrines.

The shrine’s history is closely linked to the Imperial family. Emperor Seiwa ordered Iwashimizu Hachimangu built in 859. The god Hachiman wished to be near Kyoto. He wanted to watch over the city and the Imperial House.

Like other Hachiman shrines, Iwashimizu was a shrine-temple complex. It was called Iwashimizu Hachimangu-ji. It was dedicated to Buddhism as much as to kami worship until 1868.

In 965, Emperor Murakami sent messengers to the guardian kami of Japan.

Iwashimizu Hachimangu and Ise Shrine were specified for “the two ancestral mausoleums”.

Iwashimizu Hachimangu was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha from 1871 through 1946. This meant it stood in the first rank of government-supported shrines.

The treasures at Iwashimizu include a kris. It is a jeweled Indonesian dagger.
