Stepping through the towering gates of Nishi Hongan-ji Temple, your eyes are immediately drawn to the magnificent Goei-do Hall, also known as the Miei-do. This grand structure, built in 1636, isn’t just a beautiful building. It holds the revered image of Shinran Shonin, the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and serves as a powerful symbol of his enduring legacy. The Goei-do’s sheer size is impressive. Measuring 48 meters east to west, 62 meters north to south, and reaching a height of 29 meters, it dominates the temple grounds. Inside, the central focus is the enshrined image of Shinran Shonin. Flanking this central image are portraits of successive head priests of Nishi Hongan-ji. The Goei-do is a national treasure, designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1913 and further elevated to National Treasure status in 2014. This hall has witnessed centuries of devotion and remains a vital center for Jodo Shinshu followers. The meticulous 2009 restoration, a decade-long endeavor costing 57.5 billion yen, underscores its significance. This extensive project required a workforce of six million people and was even documented by NHK in a special series. As you stand before the Goei-do, imagine the countless worshippers who have passed through its doors over the centuries, drawn by the teachings of Shinran Shonin. The Goei-do continues to resonate with the spirit of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, inviting contemplation and reverence.
