“Did emperors really wander?” That’s a question you might ask standing before the 後村上天皇住吉行宮正印殿 Stele. It marks a significant chapter in Osaka’s imperial history. Let’s delve into the story etched in this stone.

This stele commemorates a period when Emperor Go-Murakami of the Southern Imperial Court sought refuge here. In 1351, Yoshiakira Ashikaga of the Northern Imperial Court surrendered. Go-Murakami moved from Ano’o in Nara the following year. He chose Shoinden as his temporary palace. Shoinden was part of Kunika Tsumori’s property. Tsumori was the chief priest of Sumiyoshi Taisha. This palace was called Angu.

However, peace was short-lived. Yoshiakira regrouped his forces. He defeated the Emperor’s men. Go-Murakami was forced back to Ano’o. His wandering continued. Kyoto, the ancient capital, remained out of reach. Go-Murakami died on March 11, 1368 at the age of 41. Emperor Chokei then ascended to the throne.

Emperor Go-Murakami continued to visit this place. But he never recaptured Kyoto. He died here in 1368. Emperor Chokei was enthroned at this palace. Emperor Go-Murakami resided here for eight years. Emperor Chokei for one year. The palace was used for about nine years in total.

The site of this palace is designated as a national historic site. The designation occurred in March 1939.

Interestingly, Emperor Meiji also visited this site. In 1868, he rested at the former palace during his visit to Sumiyoshi Taisha.

Now, consider this. The stele you see marks a place where an emperor sought refuge. It was a center of political power. It even served as a temporary home. It connects us to a turbulent era in Japan’s history. The 後村上天皇住吉行宮正印殿 Stele stands silently. It reminds us of emperors and their wandering ways.
