Amidst the bustling energy of Wangfujing Department Store, a quiet corner holds a powerful story. The Zhang Binggui Statue stands as a testament to a man whose warmth touched the hearts of millions. This unassuming bronze figure captures Zhang Binggui in his iconic pose, a handful of candy suspended mid-air, a gentle smile gracing his face. The statue, unveiled in 1988, commemorates the “One Group of Fire” spirit that defined his life and legacy. Zhang Binggui, a Beijing native born into poverty in 1918, began working at a young age. He experienced hardship and exploitation as an apprentice. He witnessed firsthand the struggles of ordinary people. The founding of the People’s Republic of China ignited a hope within him. He became an advocate for workers’ rights and embraced the new ideals. In 1955, at the age of 36, he was recruited to work at the newly opened Wangfujing Department Store. This marked the start of his remarkable 30-year career as a sales clerk. Behind the counter, Zhang Binggui’s dedication transcended the ordinary. He meticulously studied every aspect of salesmanship. He developed innovative techniques like the “one-grab” method for precise weighing and “one-mouth clear” for quick calculations. He prioritized customer service, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. His “connect one, ask two, link three” approach ensured that every customer felt seen and valued. He greeted the first customer, engaged with the second, and made eye contact with the third, creating a seamless flow of warm interaction. His genuine care and exceptional service drew customers from far and wide. Some even traveled to Beijing just to witness his legendary skills. He became known as the “ninth sight of Beijing”, a testament to his captivating presence. A poem gifted to him captures this sentiment: “Spring’s charm fills the capital as you visit, a warm counter brings joy to all who pass; Eight wonders add a ninth to their list, Zhang Binggui’s service sets a new standard fast.” The Zhang Binggui Statue stands not only as a tribute to his dedication but also as a symbol of the “One Group of Fire” spirit. This spirit, born from his unwavering commitment to serving the people, continues to inspire generations of service workers. The inscription on the statue’s black granite base, written by Chen Yun, a revolutionary leader, reads: “One Group of Fire spirit shines bright, illuminating the city with its warmth and light.”
