“Earthquakes don’t scare me.” That’s what I imagine a Beijing resident might say living near the Zhangjiashan Han bamboo texts site. The Shanxi Rift System is a zone of active tectonics. It forms the eastern margin of the Ordos Block in northern China. The Zhangjiashan Han bamboo texts were discovered in 1983.
The Zhangjiashan Han bamboo texts are ancient Chinese writings. They date back to 196-186 BC in the Han Dynasty. Archaeologists found them in tomb number 247. The tomb was at Mount Zhangjia in Jiangling County Hubei Province. That is near modern Jingzhou. The tomb belonged to a Western Han official. He died in 186 BC.
These texts offer insights into the Han Dynasty. They were written on bamboo slips. Cords connected them into rolled scrolls. The writings included legal case precedents. There was also literature on medicine including Book on Vessels. Mathematics, military strategy and a calendar were also included. The calendar had dates ranging from 202 BC to 186 BC.
One mathematical work was found within the tomb. It is the Book on Numbers and Computation. It rapidly advanced the study of ancient Chinese mathematics. It clarified obscure passages of the Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art. The date roughly corresponds with the tomb occupant’s death. One legal case was dated 246 BC. Some legal precedents were even older from the State of Qin. The most recent legal case was dated 196 BC.
The Shanxi Rift System is named for Shanxi province. It defines the extent of the rift zone. The Weihe Basin is in Shaanxi province. The combined Weihe and Shanxi rift systems are sometimes referred to as the Weihe-Shanxi Rift System. The Fen-Wei Rift System derives from the Fen and Wei Rivers. These rivers drain through most of the rift zone.
The rift system runs for over 900 km. That is 560 miles between the Qinling orogenic belt in the south. It reaches to the Yinshan-Yanshan orogenic belt in the north. Its width varies from 40 to 120 km. That is 25 to 75 miles. It has an overall S-shaped geometry. It trends WSW to ENE and SW to NE at its southern and northern ends. It trends SSW to NNE in the main part of the rift system.
Major earthquakes have occurred in the rift system. There have been 16 events since 1300. It is one of the most seismically active areas in northern China.
