“Have you ever felt a pull toward the past a whisper from ancient stones?” Today we stand before the 式内細谷神社 Stele. It is a silent sentinel in Osaka. This isn’t just a stone marker. It’s a fragment of a story stretching back centuries.

The 式内細谷神社 Stele marks a site linked to the Hosoya Shrine. This shrine is one of three in the city. They are all listed as Shikinaisha. Shikinaisha means they were recorded in the Engishiki. The Engishiki was a compilation made during the Heian period.

Hosoya Shrine was once located in Kagra-den. The shrine’s deity remains unknown.

Local lore says disturbing the shrine brought misfortune. Cutting trees or catching fish nearby would cause stomachaches. But this curse didn’t apply to everyone. People of Hada and Uzamasa were exempt. This suggests a unique connection between the villagers and the shrine.

The 式内細谷神社 Stele is a clue to understanding this bond. The shrine may have moved due to people’s migrations.

The area was known as Uzamasa. It was home to the Hada clan immigrants. The shrine may reflect their beliefs. Some records suggest they worshipped a star god. They revered the North Star as the Heavenly Emperor. This faith might have influenced the shrine.

In 2021, plans arose to build a complex with shops and a ceremony hall. Sadly the shrine was relocated.

It now resides within the grounds of Hachigantai Shrine. It is about 180 meters north. Despite its small size, the 式内細谷神社 Stele marks a complex history. It speaks of beliefs, migrations and community ties. The 式内細谷神社 Stele is more than just a marker. It is a symbol of enduring heritage.
