Is that the faint sound of a biwa I hear? It seems to be coming from the 弁天社 right in front of us. The 弁天社 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Benzaiten.

Benzaiten is a fascinating goddess. She embodies eloquence, wealth, music and wisdom. Originally a Hindu deity named Saraswati, she journeyed from India to Japan. This happened through China between the sixth and eighth centuries.

She transformed into Benzaiten. The goddess was adopted into both Buddhism and Shinto. Here at the 弁天社, you see the Shinto aspect of Benzaiten.

Benzaiten is often associated with water. That explains why many of her shrines are near rivers or the sea. She is also linked to dragons and snakes.

The goddess is often depicted holding a biwa. This is a traditional Japanese lute. Sometimes she carries a sword and a wish-granting jewel. These jewels are called cintāmaṇi.

The Golden Light Sutra greatly influenced Benzaiten’s worship. This sutra promised to protect the state where it was chanted. Benzaiten took on the role of a fierce protector because of this.

During the medieval period, Benzaiten merged with other deities. Kisshōten, the goddess of fortune, saw her role increasingly ascribed to Benzaiten. Eventually, Benzaiten became one of the Seven Lucky Gods.

Do you know about the mantra of Benzaiten? It goes like this: Oṃ Sarasvatyai svāhā. It is believed to bring blessings.

In Japan, temples and shrines dedicated to Benzaiten are called Benten-dō or Benten-sha. The 弁天社 is a Benten-sha. These sites are often found near water. This is due to Benzaiten’s connection to rivers, ponds and springs.

Legend says Benzaiten is the daughter of a dragon-king. This king lived in a lake at the center of the world. This lake is called Anavatapta.

Benzaiten’s worship also has ties to local beliefs. Serpent and dragon symbolism is often seen. This is because she was originally a river goddess.

Some depictions show Benzaiten with Ugajin, a human-headed white snake. She may also be portrayed with a snake or dragon head, though rarely.

The 弁天社 is a place where traditions meet. It is where the Hindu Saraswati became the Japanese Benzaiten. Take a moment to appreciate this unique blend of cultures.

As you leave the 弁天社, remember Benzaiten’s gifts. May you be blessed with eloquence, wealth, music, and wisdom. Let the sound of the biwa guide you.
