From atop the Gate of Heavenly Peace what a view.

This isn’t just any gate. It’s the Tiananmen Gate a symbol of China itself. For centuries it guarded the Forbidden City. Emperors once passed through its arches. Now millions witness history unfold from its balcony.

Originally built in 1420 it was known as the Gate of Accepting Heavenly Mandate. Twice destroyed by fire it was rebuilt. Its current design dates back to 1651. That’s when it gained its current name. The Gate of Heavenly Peace.

In 1949 Mao Zedong stood here. He proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China. A giant portrait of him still hangs above the central gateway. It’s a powerful image. A reminder of a pivotal moment. Less well-known is that the gate’s vicinity sometimes displayed other portraits. Sun Yatsen Karl Marx Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin were among them. Only since 1975 has Mao been constantly on display.

Notice the two placards. They proclaim Long Live the People’s Republic of China and Long Live the Unity of the People of the World. These simple words resonate powerfully. They reflect China’s aspirations for decades.

The gate’s significance isn’t just political. It’s also a testament to remarkable craftsmanship. The intricate woodwork inside is breathtaking. It’s a sight to behold. Explore the photographic history. It chronicles the gate and Tiananmen Square. It offers a glimpse into the past. A powerful past.

Since 1987 the public can visit the Tiananmen Gate. Climb to the top. Drink in the view. Feel the weight of history beneath your feet. It is an unforgettable experience. The Tiananmen Gate is more than a gate. It’s a living monument. It’s a window into China’s soul.
