Myōhō Temple. A beacon of faith shines brightly in Neyagawa City. Kōsaiji Temple has a captivating history. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of belief. Let’s uncover the story of Kōsaiji Temple together.

Kōsaiji Temple’s origins trace back to a time of religious oppression. During the final years of the Warring States period, the Tokugawa clan ruled the region. They enforced a strict ban on Christianity. This created a dark era for believers. Secretly, in hidden locations, people continued to practice their faith. These hidden gatherings were known as “Kakure Nenbutsu Dō”. These secret prayer caves symbolize the struggle and resilience of the faithful.

With the dawn of the Meiji era, the official ban on Christianity lifted. However, true religious freedom remained elusive. It wasn’t until the ninth month of the ninth year of the Meiji era that restrictions truly eased. In the second month of the eleventh year of Meiji, Kōsaiji Temple opened its doors. It served as a Hongan-ji Buddhist seminary. This marked the third such seminary in the local area and the fifth within the larger Osakafu prefecture. The seminary flourished. Later, in the first month of the nineteenth year of Meiji, it officially received its temple name: Kōsaiji.

The Kōsaiji Temple we see today is a result of years of development. The initial temple building, completed in the sixth month of the eleventh year of Meiji, measured seven rooms wide and six and a half rooms deep. Later, in the second month of the 44th year of Meiji, a larger main hall was completed. This new hall spanned ten rooms wide and thirteen and a half rooms deep. It incorporated the former main hall of the Tokugawa family temple.

Over the years, Kōsaiji Temple continued to evolve. In the third month of the 44th year of Meiji, a grand dedication ceremony took place. The temple also witnessed numerous renovations and expansions. A funeral hall was newly built and the priest’s quarters were renovated in the third year of Taisho. In the seventh year of Taisho, a remarkable event occurred. A three-day, 650th anniversary memorial service for Shinran Shonin took place. Shinran Shonin is a revered figure in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.

Kōsaiji Temple’s story intertwines with the community it serves. The temple established a women’s association in the ninth year of Taisho. It also opened the first permanent nursery school in the Mirimachi area during the 33rd year of Showa. This later became the Mirimachi Central Nursery School. Further demonstrating its commitment to education, Kōsaiji Temple established the Ichimanjo Nursery in Tokushima City in the 41st year of Showa. Kōsaiji Temple has been a vital part of the community’s spiritual and social fabric for over a century. It stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and community service.
