Question: What if I told you that the oldest temple in Kyoto stands right before you? This is Koryu-ji. It is also known as Uzumasa-dera and Kadono-dera. Once, it was called Hatanokimi-dera, Hachioka-dera, and Hokoji.

Koryu-ji Temple has a rich history. It is said to have been built in 603. Hata no Kawakatsu built it. He received a Buddhist statue from Prince Shotoku. Imagine the importance of such a gift. Fires ravaged the temple in 818 and 1150. Despite destruction, it was rebuilt multiple times.

Koryu-ji holds many important cultural treasures. One standout treasure is the wooden statue of Bodhisattva Maitreya. It is called Hokan Miroku. This national treasure was registered on June 9, 1951. The statue depicts the Bodhisattva. He sits contemplatively in the half-lotus position. It is a rare and beautiful object. It is carefully preserved and displayed at Koryu-ji.

The temple was also known for its Bull Festival. This was called Ushi Matsuri. It was traditionally held in mid-October. Unfortunately, the festival is currently suspended.

Visiting Koryu-ji offers a glimpse into Kyoto’s past. You see the dedication to preserving cultural heritage. The temple’s long history and precious artifacts make it a unique destination. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry. Consider the generations who have cared for this special place at Koryu-ji.
