“A tomb? A sacrificial altar?” Imagine the confusion of archaeologists. They stood here in 2003 trying to decipher the mysteries of what is now known as the Kangling Mausoleum.

Today we stand at the Kangling Mausoleum. It is a testament to Guangzhou’s rich history. Kangling is the final resting place of Liu Yan. He was the founder of the Southern Han dynasty. This was one of the Ten Kingdoms during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period.

The Kangling Mausoleum is China’s first fully revealed imperial tomb complex. It dates back to the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms era. It is also the only one formally excavated. The layout of Kangling is complete.

Imagine this place in its prime. The total area of the mausoleum reaches 12,800 square meters. It mainly comprises the tomb itself with its underground palace. Above ground constructions include the mausoleum terrace. Enclosing the complex was a sacred wall with corner towers. Mausoleum gates guarded the entrances. A complex of buildings stood to the south of the mausoleum gate.

The design of the Kangling Mausoleum highlights key features. The original appearance is a focal point. You can see obvious damage to the upper part of the mausoleum terrace. The passage leading to the tomb also shows the marks of time. Various methods protect and authentically present the site. These include protective coverings and infilling around the perimeter.

Note the different colors of accumulated earth. Each color reflects a different aspect of the site’s history. The red bricks highlight certain features. The current displays are 1:1 scale. What we see corresponds exactly to how it was. The width of the walls matches the original wall width. The brick patterns align with the original brick positions.

Let’s step inside the exhibition hall. Don’t miss the five-minute 3D animated film at the start. It offers a vivid look at the mausoleum’s original appearance and interior. This gives a great overview before exploring further.

The entire Kangling Mausoleum is like a grand stage. The designers aimed to create a comfortable and captivating atmosphere. They used the surrounding walls as a backdrop. This creates a cohesive setting.

The immersive art performance brings this setting to life. It uses a giant electronic screen. This displays images of phoenixes. This symbolizes the Southern Han period.

The double phoenix pattern is representative of the Southern Han era. It is often found on unearthed tiles. This unique decoration is seen in palace ruins and mausoleums. The goal is to create beauty. The design softens the mausoleum’s atmosphere. It aligns with modern aesthetic preferences.

The Kangling Mausoleum showcases its cultural heritage through exhibits. After protecting the site the Guangzhou Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology studied its historical and cultural value. Displays tell the story of Kangling in three sections. These are “Sacrificial Altar? Mausoleum!”, “Island Time,” and “Moving the Gods.”

Each tells a different aspect of the mausoleum’s history. The first section recreates the archaeological dig. The second explores the island’s connection to Kangling. The third discusses Liu Yan. It details the moving of the tomb and sacrificial rituals.

Take a moment to walk around the mausoleum terrace. Notice the exhibits. They tell a story of discovery and history. The first time you circle Kangling, reflect on its history. The second time read the information closely. From west to east trace the story.

Kangling is the feng shui treasure. Liu Yan chose this location before his death. It is backed by mountains and faces water. The view is open.

Today as we leave Kangling Mausoleum note the Southern Han Two Mausoleums Museum to the east. Its exhibits reveal important archaeological finds from Kangling. Together the mausoleum and the museum display the history of the Southern Han dynasty. Kangling has transformed. It now tells its precious story. The mausoleum’s vitality is renewed. It connects the past with today’s society.
