Let’s step back in time to December 1870. The \u5e9c\u7acb\u6d1b\u5317\u9ad8\u7b49\u5b66\u6821 first opened its doors. It began as a Kyoto prefectural Junior High School. This makes it the oldest junior high school in Japan.

The \u5e9c\u7acb\u6d1b\u5317\u9ad8\u7b49\u5b66\u6821 wasn’t always called that. It was later renamed Kyoto Prefectural Kyoto Daiichi Junior High School. Then in April 1954 it got its current name. It became Kyoto Prefectural Rakuhoku High School.

\u5e9c\u7acb\u6d1b\u5317\u9ad8\u7b49\u5b66\u6821 has produced many notable people. Two Nobel Prize winners are among its alumni. They are Hideki Yukawa and Shin-ichiro Tomonaga. Many graduates have become leaders in different fields.

In April 2004 the \u5e9c\u7acb\u6d1b\u5317\u9ad8\u7b49\u5b66\u6821 added a junior high school. This started a new era of integrated middle and high school education here.
