Established in 1971, Kyoto Prefectural Joyo High School has witnessed a fascinating evolution. Imagine a time before the bustling shops and houses that now surround the school. In 1971, construction began on this very spot, transforming the landscape. Kyoto Prefectural Joyo High School officially opened its doors on April 10, 1972, as a co-educational public high school. Initially, it offered both general and commercial courses. It quickly became a vital part of the community. The school expanded in phases. The first phase included most of Building 1, the western part of Building 2, and the original gymnasium, now known as Gymnasium II. The second phase completed the remaining sections of Building 1 and 3. The grounds also housed ancient burial mounds from the Maenohira Kofun Cluster. These were carefully excavated and removed to preserve the historical artifacts. A dedicated room, the Maenohira Kofun Cluster Museum, now showcases a replica of the mounds, explanatory panels, and unearthed artifacts within the school. Interestingly, Gymnasium II’s entrance doesn’t face the schoolyard. This unusual layout resulted from the late discovery of the burial mounds. After the building plans were finalized, the presence of the kofun became apparent. The construction team had to quickly adapt and reconfigure the placement of the gymnasium. Between Buildings 1 and 2 lies a charming courtyard known as the “Joyo Hawaii.” Its name comes from the flourishing shuro trees that resemble the foliage of Hawaii, creating a tranquil oasis for students. The school continued to adapt to the changing educational landscape. In 1992, the commercial course was discontinued. A new gymnasium, Gymnasium I, was built in 1993. Several curriculum revisions occurred over the years, reflecting evolving educational priorities. Today, Kyoto Prefectural Joyo High School boasts a vibrant student body of over 900 students. It remains a testament to the power of education and community.
