“The Green Ram Temple,” whispered the wind, rustling through the ancient ginkgo trees, beckoning us closer to Qingyang Temple. Right before us stood Chengdu’s oldest Taoist temple, a sprawling testament to centuries of history and devotion. Stepping through the ornate gateway, it felt like stepping back in time, to the Zhou dynasty when the temple was first built. Though much of what we see today dates from the Qing dynasty, the spirit of ancient times still lingers. The air hummed with a sense of peace, a stark contrast to the bustling city outside. Deep within the temple, an architectural marvel awaited: an unusual, eight-sided pagoda, squat and strong, built without the use of bolts or pegs. This architectural feat seemed to defy gravity, a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient craftsmen. After marveling at the pagoda, we could retreat to the popular teahouse nestled inside the temple. As we sipped fragrant tea, we would imagine the countless devotees and emperors who sought solace and wisdom within these very walls. Their spirits seemed to whisper through the centuries, reminding us of the enduring power of faith and the timeless beauty of Qingyang Temple.
