Ever imagine a train station transforming into a time capsule? The Guangzhou Railway Museum, right here, is just that. It stands as a testament to the rich railway history of China, a journey from steam engines to electric locomotives. The museum itself is relatively new, opening its doors on International Museum Day, May 18, 2022. But its location, the former Huangsha Railway Station, has a story stretching back over a century.

Huangsha Station first welcomed passengers in 1907. It served as a vital transportation hub, the starting point of the Yuehan Railway. In 1946, passenger services shifted elsewhere, and the station was renamed Guangzhou South. It continued its life handling freight until its final closure in 2005. Now, the Guangzhou Railway Museum occupies this historic site, breathing new life into the old warehouses. The museum boasts a sprawling space. It covers approximately 18,500 square meters indoors and an additional 10,500 square meters outdoors.

Within these walls, you’ll encounter a captivating collection of railway artifacts and rolling stock. A magnificent China Railways JS steam locomotive stands as a reminder of a bygone era. Nearby, a powerful DF4D diesel-electric locomotive represents the transition to more modern technology. Then there’s the sleek SS6B electric locomotive, showcasing the advancements of electric-powered travel. The museum also displays various passenger cars. These include China Railways type 22 hard seat cars and a 25G dining car. You can even see a P1 Boxcar, offering a glimpse into the history of freight transportation.

Interestingly, the Guangzhou Railway Museum has also hosted some exhibits that have since moved on. These include a China Railway DJJ1 power car and a 25C soft seat car. While no longer on display at the Guangzhou Railway Museum, they represent the ever-changing nature of museum collections. The Guangzhou Railway Museum isn’t just a collection of static displays. It’s a dynamic space that tells the story of China’s railway progress. It’s a place where the echoes of the past meet the promise of the future. From the hiss of steam to the hum of electricity, the spirit of rail travel lives on within the Guangzhou Railway Museum.
