A whisper of history drifts from the Guangji Bridge. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s one of China’s four famous ancient bridges. A marvel of engineering. A testament to centuries of skill.

The Guangji Bridge in Chaozhou Guangdong province stands proudly over the Han River. It’s more than just a way to cross water. It’s a living piece of history. Built in 1170 during the Song dynasty its original name was Kangji Bridge. It was a floating bridge. Imagine 86 large boats connected together.

Floods ravaged the bridge in 1174. Reconstruction began. Several magistrates oversaw the project. Each contributing their efforts. Zhu Jiang Wang Zhenggong Ding Yinyuan and Wang Shujin all played a role. Ding Yinyuan built many piers. The bridge was even called Ding Gong Bridge for a time. By 1206 thirteen piers stood strong.

The bridge eventually combined elements of a beam bridge and a pontoon bridge. Boats connected the stone sections. This ingenious design allowed ships to pass through. It was closed for foot traffic otherwise. Mao Yisheng a renowned bridge expert called it the world’s earliest open-close bridge.

The Guangji Bridge thrived. Twenty-four pavilions lined its length. Shops and businesses flourished. A saying arose “In one Li one the bridge there is one Li of business market.” It speaks to the bridge’s economic importance.

Time marched on. Floods took their toll. Pavilions disappeared. Ox statues guarding the bridge were lost. By 1958 a beam bridge replaced the pontoon section. A newer bridge was built nearby in 1989. This preserved the ancient structure for future generations. In 2009 the rebuilt Guangji Bridge reopened. It continues to attract visitors from around the world. A stunning example of ancient Chinese architecture. A symbol of Chaozhou’s rich culture. A bridge that whispers stories through time.
