Wondering how a Yuan Dynasty temple continues to thrive in modern Beijing? The Guanghua Temple stands as a testament to Beijing’s enduring Buddhist heritage. It is one of the city’s most renowned temples.

Let’s step inside this historic temple together. The Guanghua Temple is located at 31 Ya’er Hutong. This places it north of Shichahai in Beijing’s Xicheng District.

Founded between 1271 and 1368 during the Yuan Dynasty, the Guanghua Temple holds centuries of stories. It has witnessed dynastic changes and cultural shifts.

In 1463, the Guanghua Temple was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty. It was again rebuilt in 1852 and 1894. Later, in 1937, the Beijing artist Pu Ru funded a renovation of the temple.

Interestingly, in 1949, the Guanghua Temple housed sixty monks. However, the temple faced closure in 1965 during the Cultural Revolution. The monks were forced to leave. Most of the statues and deities were destroyed.

Yet, the Guanghua Temple experienced a renaissance. It was reconstructed in December 1980. In 1983, Yiran, a 36-year-old monk, became the head monk. He was later replaced by 24-year-old master Xuecheng in 1990.

Today, you can visit the Guanghua Temple on the first and fifteenth of every lunar month. Inside, a stone staircase of 199 steps awaits.

Also discover Jialan Palace, Tianwang Palace, Gaoshan Gate, Dizang Palace and Sanzang Palace. The Beijing Buddhist Association is located here.

Many tourists visit the Guanghua Temple and enjoy its ambience. The Guanghua Temple is near the Silver Bridge and Madam Song Qingling Mansion. It is also close to the Joy City Hotel Beijing.

As we conclude our visit to the Guanghua Temple. Remember its history as one of Beijing’s important Buddhist temples. From its founding in the Yuan Dynasty to its revival after the Cultural Revolution, the Guanghua Temple represents resilience. Its continued presence offers a peaceful retreat.
