Did you know that the earth beneath Guangzhou is constantly monitored? Right here stands the 广东省地震局. It is Guangdong Province’s earthquake agency. Its work is vital for the safety of everyone living in this region.

The 广东省地震局 is responsible for several tasks. These include monitoring seismic activity and providing early warnings. They also focus on disaster risk reduction and public education. They help residents understand earthquake safety.

In September 2023 the Guangdong Earthquake Agency deepened its cooperation with the Hong Kong Observatory. They signed a Cooperation Framework Agreement. This agreement strengthens earthquake monitoring. It also enhances capabilities for disaster risk reduction. The agreement covers research on geomagnetic measurements. Joint conferences and public education are also included.

The Hong Kong Observatory now receives earthquake information from the Guangdong Earthquake Agency. This helps them improve their earthquake information service. This collaboration aims to improve earthquake monitoring in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Guangdong has been working hard to improve its earthquake early warning system. A provincial standard for earthquake early warning was approved. It took effect on April 17 2024. This standard defines different levels of earthquake warnings. It also sets out principles for issuing warning messages.

The standard considers the impact of strong earthquakes. It states that people in warning areas should receive messages. This happens when the seismic intensity reaches 2 degrees.

The province’s earthquake warning system will improve its functions. 1463 warning terminals will be used in important locations. These locations include government departments schools and hospitals. Nuclear power stations gas stations and rail lines are also included.

When a terminal detects an earthquake of 2 degrees or higher it issues warnings. These warnings come through words sounds and lights.

To reach more residents television publishing services will be used. Viewers of Guangdong Radio and Television will receive real-time warnings. GMCC users with IPTV will also get these messages through set-top boxes.

The Guangdong sub-project of the national early warning system began in 2018. It has built 1172 earthquake monitoring sites. There is also a provincial warning center. 21 municipal service platforms and 263 professional warning terminals have been established. It officially launched on January 1 2024.

Guangdong now has a second-level earthquake warning ability. This means warnings are issued 10 seconds after an earthquake. This covers most onshore areas except Shaoguan and Qingyuan. Minute-level reporting of seismic intensity is based on town data.

Shaoguan and Qingyuan have a second-level warning ability of 20 seconds. This is for strong far-field earthquakes. Minute-level reporting of seismic intensity uses data from counties and cities.

Leading the 广东省地震局 is Sun Peiqing. He is the Party Group Secretary and Director. He is responsible for the overall work of the agency. Other key leaders include He Xiaoling Huang Shengwu Shi Weiqiang Zhang Ruirui Chen Xiaofa and Pang Hongming. They each handle different aspects of earthquake monitoring and disaster prevention.

The 广东省地震局 remains committed to protecting the people of Guangdong. It does this through advanced monitoring early warning systems and public education.
