Originally located in a different part of Kyoto, the temple faced a devastating fire in 1671. The Great Teramachi Fire swept through the city, leaving Jorinji in ruins. It was then rebuilt in its current location, a testament to resilience and renewal. Within the temple grounds, a statue of Jizo, the guardian deity of children, stands watch. This statue, erected in 1854, is a place where people leave offerings and prayers for their children’s well-being. The very ground beneath your feet, once covered in bush clover, echoes with a quieter history. Today, Jorinji Temple is a serene escape from the city’s energy.
