Opened in 1992, Kyoto Shiritsu Rakuo Elementary School stands as a testament to the ever-changing urban landscape. It arose from the consolidation of seven older schools, each with its own rich history dating back to the Meiji period. Imagine children from different neighborhoods, once separated by schoolyard walls, now united within these walls. Kyoto Shiritsu Rakuo Elementary School was built on the former site of Hoyono Elementary School. The new building wasn’t ready until 1994. So, for the first two years, classes were held at the old Hoyono location. This four-story structure, with an additional basement level, isn’t your typical elementary school. Hallways open into common spaces, creating a sense of community and encouraging interaction. The schoolyard, a vibrant green expanse of artificial turf, offers a welcome contrast to the concrete jungle. The architects designed open spaces and hallways that lead into each other to foster a sense of openness. They chose sloped roofs to mimic the surrounding mountains and blend with Kyoto’s distinct cityscape. They used concrete for the exterior walls, adding a texture reminiscent of textiles, a nod to Kyoto’s historical connection to the industry. Kyoto Shiritsu Rakuo Elementary School serves a large district, bordered by Shijo Street, Gojo Street, the Kamogawa River, and the Horikawa River. Today, it boasts 21 classes and a student population of around 600. From its unique architectural features to its historical roots, Kyoto Shiritsu Rakuo Elementary School is more than just a school. It’s a vibrant hub, echoing the past while shaping the future of its young students.
