Envision a time. It is 1947. That was when Higashi Osaka Municipal Shinkitano Junior High School first opened its doors.

Today, we stand before Higashi Osaka Municipal Shinkitano Junior High School. It is a public junior high school. The school is located in Higashi Osaka City. More precisely, it is in the Shinkitano district.

Originally, it was called Fuse Municipal Second Junior High School. Fuse merged with other cities. It became Higashi Osaka City in 1967. The city decided to change school names. Numbers were out. Local names were in. The school was renamed Shinkitano Junior High School.

In 1969, the school added a gymnasium. A pool was completed in 1972. Technology arrived in 1995. A computer room was built.

The school’s location has historical context. Osaka has been a vital hub for centuries. In 645 AD, Emperor Kotoku built a palace in Osaka. He made it the capital. Though the capital moved, Osaka remained important. It connected Nara, China and Korea.

Education in Japan has evolved greatly. In the Edo period, temple schools taught reading and writing. By the end of that period, literacy in Tokyo was about 80 percent. After World War II, the education system was overhauled. It was modeled after American schools.

Shinkitano Junior High School reflects these changes. It began as Fuse Municipal Second Junior High School. Then it adapted to the needs of its community. It embraced technology. It provided facilities for sports. It became Higashi Osaka Municipal Shinkitano Junior High School.
