Lunchtime at Kyoto City Kitajōyō Junior High School. The aroma of curry rice drifts from the school cafeteria. Can you imagine the clatter of trays and the excited chatter of students? This is the heart of Kitajōyō Junior High, a school brimming with life and history. Kyoto City Kitajōyō Junior High School officially opened its doors on April 1, 1981. It was established as the fifth municipal junior high school in the city. Kitajōyō Junior High is located in the northern part of Joyo City, Kyoto Prefecture, near the border with Uji City. The school’s establishment was a significant event, born from the division of Kyoto City Nishijōyō Junior High School. Originally, the city planned four junior high schools. However, the planned location for the fourth school, tentatively named the Fourth Junior High School (now Kyoto City Higashijōyō Junior High School), was too far east. With projections showing increased student enrollment at Nishijōyō Junior High, and the need for two elementary schools and one junior high school, the city decided to build Kitajōyō Junior High School concurrently with the Fourth Junior High School. Kitajōyō quickly became a bustling hub, with over 1,000 students at its peak. More recently, due to declining birth rates, the student population has decreased to about two to three classes per grade. The school has seen many changes throughout the years. In 1982, the school song was established. In 1987, a new uniform (blazer) was adopted. In 1998, incinerators were discontinued, and shredders were installed. In 2002, a crime prevention system was put in place. In 2011, a delegation of 20 students from Miryang City, South Korea, visited Kitajōyō Junior High. The school grounds, bordering Uji City, house modern facilities. These include a newly renovated gymnasium and shower facilities. Kitajōyō Junior High School also implements a school lunch center system. This means students enjoy nutritious meals prepared on-site.
