“Strive Righteously. Enjoyably. Earnestly.” This is the motto of Kyoto City Shugakuin Elementary School. We stand before this public school. It resides in Sakyo Ward Kyoto.
Kyoto City Shugakuin Elementary School has a long history. It started in 1916. It was originally named Shugakuin Village Municipal Shugakuin Jinjo Elementary School. The school’s location is at 1 Takano Nioicho.
In 1873, Ichijo-ji Jinjo Elementary School was established. Later in 1874, Shugakuin Jinjo Elementary School was founded. Then in 1876, Takano Jinjo Elementary School was established. These schools were the foundation for what would become Shugakuin Elementary.
In 1908, Shugakuin Jinjo Elementary School was abolished. Matsugasaki and Shugakuin became part of Kakuchi Jinjo Elementary School. In 1916, Shugakuin Village dissolved its union with Matsugasaki Village. Kakuchi Elementary School was abolished. Shugakuin Village Municipal Shugakuin Jinjo Elementary School was then established. In November of the same year the school building was completed.
The school has seen many changes. In 1941, it became Kyoto City Shugakuin National School. This was due to the National School Order. During World War II in 1945 the school building became a factory. It was used for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. Students were scattered to different areas for lessons. After the war, the children returned to the school.
In 1947, it was renamed Kyoto City Shugakuin Elementary School. This followed the School Education Act. In 1950, a special needs class was established. In 1959, Kyoto City Shugakuin Second Elementary School was established. It separated from this school. In 1976, Kyoto City Kamitakano Elementary School was established. It too separated from Shugakuin Elementary School.
The students participate in sports. In 2012, sixth-graders competed in a national relay race. In 2013, sixth-graders participated in a national cross-country race.
In 2020, the school temporarily closed due to COVID-19. It was closed until May 31st. In February 2021, GIGA School concept initiatives began.
The school’s location is easily accessible. You can reach it by bus or subway. The closest bus stop is Shugakuin Rikyu-michi a five-minute walk. Shugakuin Station is a seven-minute walk away.
Shugakuin Elementary School continues to educate. It fosters students who learn independently. They develop self-discipline. The school encourages them to “Strive Righteously. Enjoyably. Earnestly.” Its history reflects changes in Japan’s education system. It remains a vital part of the community.
Kyoto City Shugakuin Elementary School also has a soccer club. It is called Shugakuin Football Club Sports Shonen Dan. Most of the members are students from Shugakuin Elementary School. The club was founded in 1982. Their motto is “Fun and Long.” They practice so that all members enjoy soccer and love soccer.
The team aims to win every game. As representatives of Kyoto, the team works together. They have fun and do their best to win.
Kyoto City Shugakuin Elementary School is more than just a school. It is a place where children learn grow and strive for their best.
