Established in 1872 as Fushimi Second School, Kyoto Municipal Fushimi Itabashi Elementary School has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the centuries. Originally located in the former Oe manor, the school embarked on a journey of name changes reflecting the evolving landscape of education. The school became the Third University District Sixth Middle School District Fushimi Itabashi School in 1876. Just a year later, in 1877, Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken graced the school with their presence, taking a moment of respite within its walls. In 1882, it was renamed Fushimi Itabashi Elementary School. Subsequent name changes followed, including Fushimi Itabashi Shima Normal Elementary School in 1887 and Fushimi Village First Shima Normal Elementary School in 1889. This last change came with the implementation of the town system. The school transitioned to the newly established Third Shima Normal Elementary School in 1903, now known as Fushimi Ikuyoshi Elementary School. It became Fushimi First Shima Normal Higher Elementary School in 1918 and then Fushimi First Shima Normal Elementary School in 1920. With the establishment of Fushimi City in 1929, the school became Fushimi Shima Normal Elementary School. Upon its incorporation into Kyoto City in 1931, it was christened Kyoto City Fushimi Third Shima Normal Elementary School. Disaster struck in 1934 when the Muroto Typhoon caused significant damage to the school building. Amidst these changes, the school continued its mission of nurturing young minds. It became Fushimi Itabashi National School in 1941, finally settling into its present name, Kyoto Municipal Fushimi Itabashi Elementary School, in 1947. The school celebrated its centennial anniversary in 1972, marking a century of educational dedication. In more recent times, the north school building was completed in July 1990. The school pool was finished in 1992. The school adopted the School Evaluation Committee system in 2001. In October 2005, the school received the 57th Kyoto City Education Achievement Award. The School Management Council was established in 2006. And in a proud moment in November 2019, Fushimi Itabashi Elementary School received the “Education Practice Achievement Award” from Kyoto City. This long history demonstrates the school’s enduring commitment to education within the heart of Kyoto.
