In 1869, two schools opened their doors, laying the foundation for what would eventually become the Nijō Castle North Elementary School. These were the Kamigyo 14th Ward Elementary School and the Kamigyo 17th Ward Elementary School. Fast forward to 1997, amidst declining birth rates and shrinking classrooms, these two schools merged, giving birth to Nijō Castle North Elementary School. The school stands on the same grounds as the former Kamigyo 14th Ward Elementary School. The old Kamigyo 17th Ward Elementary building isn’t abandoned. It now serves as the Kyoto City Developmental Disabilities Support Center “Kagayaki”.
