Have you heard the story of the brave warrior who founded this very shrine? Standing before you is the Shotokusuwa Jinja, a Shinto shrine with a history that stretches back centuries. It was established in the year 797 by the warrior Shiba no Sukune, a legendary figure known for his strength and cunning. Shiba no Sukune was entrusted with the important task of protecting the capital of Kyoto from invaders. He was a wise and benevolent leader, and his people looked to him for guidance and protection. But his enemies were powerful, and they constantly threatened the safety of the city.

One evening, as Shiba no Sukune stood gazing out over the city, he heard a strange noise coming from the nearby forest. He cautiously ventured into the woods, where he encountered a beautiful woman. She introduced herself as the goddess of the forest, and she told Shiba no Sukune that she would offer him her protection in exchange for his help. The warrior agreed, and they formed a pact. Shiba no Sukune promised to honor the goddess, and he vowed to build a shrine in her name.

The goddess kept her promise, and she granted Shiba no Sukune victory over his enemies. True to his word, Shiba no Sukune built the Shotokusuwa Jinja, a magnificent shrine dedicated to the forest goddess who had saved his people. The shrine has stood here for centuries, a silent testament to the warrior’s faith and the goddess’s power. Today, the Shotokusuwa Jinja remains a vibrant place of worship, attracting both local residents and visitors from all over the world. It is said that the spirit of Shiba no Sukune still watches over this shrine, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and courage.
