Could a man truly serve two worlds? Here at the Ono no Takamura monument, we unravel a tale woven between heaven and hell. This monument, erected in 1913, commemorates Ono no Takamura, a prominent figure in Kyoto’s rich history. He was a renowned calligrapher, poet, and scholar who served in the Imperial Court. But whispers follow his name, tales of a secret life that transcended the mortal realm. Ono no Takamura, or Sangi no Takamura as he was also known, lived from 802 to 853. He excelled in the arts and held a respected position in the court of Emperor Saga. Yet, legend claims he held another, more clandestine role. Every night, it’s said he descended into hell through a well, aiding the formidable King Enma in judging souls. Imagine Takamura, by day composing elegant poems and advising the emperor, and by night traversing the shadowy paths of the underworld. One story speaks of a nobleman, Fujiwara no Yoshimi, who died and journeyed to Meido, the realm of the dead. There, to his astonishment, he found Takamura beside King Enma, acting as an advisor. Takamura recognized Yoshimi’s soul and vouched for his return to the living world. Yoshimi was revived, but the experience left him with a profound fear of Takamura’s power. The tale of the well to hell, located at Rokudō Chinno-ji Temple, cemented Takamura’s place in Kyoto’s folklore. This monument marks the path he supposedly took to the underworld each night. While Sagano Fukusei-ji, where he supposedly emerged each morning, no longer stands, the legend of Ono no Takamura persists. His story serves as a fascinating blend of history and myth, reminding us of the hidden depths that lie beneath the surface of this ancient city. This monument to Ono no Takamura offers a glimpse into a world where the boundaries between life and death blurred, and where a single man could serve both the emperor and the king of hell.
