“Lost to time, yet echoing with whispers of emperors,” I begin, gesturing towards the Zunsheng Pagoda. “This pagoda, also known as the Liuliuzhuan Pagoda, isn’t in Beijing. Our knowledge today leads us to Huyangling, nestled 20 km northeast of Wutai County. This isn’t the bustling capital, but a journey into a different kind of history.” I pause, letting the weight of that realization settle. “The Zunsheng Temple, home to this elegant structure, has seen centuries come and go. Founded during the powerful Tang Dynasty, it originally bore the name ‘Shan Zhu Ge Yuan’. Imagine, monks finding solace within these walls, their chants rising with the morning mist. Time marched on, dynasties changed, and with them, the temple’s name. In the Northern Song Dynasty, it was reborn as the ‘Zhen Rong Chan Yuan’. Finally, after renovations during the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli period, it received the name it holds today: Zunsheng Temple. Even in the later Qing Dynasty, under the reign of Tongzhi, the temple saw further renewal. A stele, erected in the Kangxi period, stands as a silent testament to this rich history. The Zunsheng Pagoda itself reflects the architectural styles prevalent during the Republic of China era. It stands on over 32,000 square meters of land, a testament to its enduring presence.”
