Doesn’t the name Terasaki Castle sound cool? Right here stands what is believed to be its former location. But let’s dive into the somewhat murky history of Terasaki Castle.

Terasaki Castle is located in present-day Sako City in Chiba Prefecture. Some believe it was built in 1455. That year, Mako Yasutsune of the Chiba clan took control of the family. Terasaki Castle became his home. It was meant to replace the ruined Inohana Castle after a fire.

Yasutsune’s son built Sako Castle in 1484. Terasaki Castle was a home for a long time. Yet there is a strong argument that Terasaki Castle never existed.

For nearly thirty years, the Chiba clan used the site as their castle. However, there are few remains. This makes some think that Terasaki Castle is a myth. The castle is not even listed in books about Japanese castles. It only appears in explanations of the Ota Doshiro castle.

I have visited Terasaki Castle twice. Both times, the weather was lovely in spring. As you drive, you can see a flag. It marks the Terasaki Castle site. A steep hill leads to a temple. The grounds have castle-like features. There is also a stone monument. Locals likely see this as a castle site.

The hill where the temple sits offers great views. You can see in all directions. Sako Castle did not exist back then. Building a castle on this hill made sense. Earthworks remain around the temple and nearby fields. Personally, I want to believe that Terasaki Castle existed.

The scenery from Terasaki Castle is like classic Japan. Rice paddies stretch far into the distance. This calms the hearts of Japanese people. During my second visit, I heard frogs singing. It was like a big chorus on the way home. I hadn’t experienced that in a long time.

You can reach Terasaki Castle by train. Get off at Sako Station on the JR Sobu Main Line. It’s a 25-minute walk from there. The castle is located near the temple.

Some say that Terasaki was part of Ota’s castle. Others doubt that the site was ever a real castle. What do you think? Was Terasaki Castle a true stronghold or just a strategic point?
