Did the ground beneath Kyocera Dome Osaka ever tremble with the roar of a crowd? It did, but much further north. We’re standing at the site of the former Neyagawa Baseball Stadium, commemorated by the Neyagawa Kyujyo Ato Monument. The actual stadium vanished long ago, replaced by homes and the hum of daily life. Yet, its legacy echoes here at this intersection.

The Neyagawa Baseball Stadium, a key part of the Kyoto Grand Ground, opened in August 1922. It predates the completion of Koshien Stadium by two years. Imagine school tournaments, children’s games, and even company baseball teams filling this space with cheers and the crack of the bat. In 1923, this field witnessed tryouts for professional teams, including the Daiei and Tenri baseball teams. There were even discussions about hosting high school baseball’s Senbatsu Tournament here. Sadly, limited seating and transportation challenges prevented those grand plans.

The stadium wasn’t just for baseball. The Kyoto Grand Ground also housed a velodrome and a tennis court. There was even a temporary train station nearby, the Undojyo-mae Station, specifically built to bring in spectators. This entire complex showcased Keihan Electric Railway’s vision for the area. They imagined bustling crowds and exciting events. However, financial difficulties and wartime pressures led to the stadium’s closure in 1942. The land was sold for housing, and the roar of the crowd faded into the quiet of a residential neighborhood.

The Neyagawa Kyujyo Ato Monument, placed here in 1990, serves as a poignant reminder of this lost sporting venue. It marks the spot where the Neyagawa Baseball Stadium once stood, a testament to the passion and energy that once filled this now quiet corner of Osaka.
