Mysteries and whispers. That’s what surrounds the Jakkō-ji Temple, doesn’t it? We stand before Jakkō-ji Temple, a place steeped in history and shrouded in captivating tales. Known also as Eguchi-no-kimi-dō, Jakkō-ji’s story begins in 1205. Founded by Myōzenkō Hibōni, a woman linked to the powerful Taira no Shigemori, the temple’s origins intertwine with the era’s turbulent power dynamics. Jakkō-ji Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a time capsule whispering tales of the past. This area, Eguchi, was a bustling hub for water transportation between Kyoto and Osaka. It attracted many courtesans, including the enigmatic Eguchi-no-kimi, or Lady of Eguchi. Legend paints her as a woman of extraordinary beauty and wit. Some believe she was a disguised daughter of Taira no Shigemori, seeking refuge after her clan’s fall. Eguchi-no-kimi is immortalized in the Noh play “Eguchi”. The play recounts a captivating exchange between her and the traveling priest Saigyō. Their dialogue, filled with poetry and hidden meanings, hints at the courtesan’s sharp intellect and spiritual depth. The Noh play further connects Eguchi-no-kimi with Jakkō-ji Temple. It’s said she later became a Buddhist nun, taking the name Myōzenkō Hibōni. This makes her the founder of the temple we stand before today. Jakkō-ji faced its share of trials. It was destroyed by fire during the Genkō and Enkyō eras but was later rebuilt in the Shōtoku era (1711-1716). Interestingly, it transitioned from a Tendai sect temple to its current status as a Buddhist temple. Jakkō-ji’s present structure dates back to this reconstruction. Another fascinating tale surrounds a statue within Jakkō-ji. Legend has it that Akamatsu Sukemori, suffering from a severe illness, miraculously recovered after praying to this statue. This event boosted the temple’s reputation, drawing numerous worshippers seeking healing and blessings. So, as you gaze upon Jakkō-ji Temple, remember the layers of stories etched within its walls.
