Nestled in the heart of Itami, the Yōjusuji Temple, also known as Yōjūji, whispers tales of ancient pilgrimages and sacred rests. The temple grounds, steeped in history, invite you to step back in time. Yōjusuji Temple, belonging to the Tendai sect, traces its origins back to Prince Shōtoku. Legend says, during his travels from Shitennō-ji Temple to Naka-yamadera Temple, the prince paused in this very spot. He tethered his horse to a willow tree and rested on a large rock, finding the area so serene that he decided to establish a temple here. This is how Yōjusuji Temple began its journey through the centuries. Within the temple’s peaceful embrace resides a remarkable treasure. The wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon statue. Considered the oldest Buddhist statue in Itami, this statue radiates a quiet strength. Its unique posture, with one hand holding a water jar and the other raised before its chest, evokes a sense of calm and compassion. This design is characteristic of the Heian period’s mid-period style. Yōjusuji Temple also holds the “Taiko’s Belly Button Stone.” Legend says Prince Shōtoku rested upon this very stone. A stone marker commemorates the “Pine-Tying Willow,” where the prince supposedly tethered his horse. The temple’s main hall, rebuilt in 1696, reflects a unique architectural style. With its distinctive square layout and central corridor, it provides a sanctuary for contemplation and prayer. The main hall survived the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. It was restored to its former glory, continuing to be a spiritual haven. Yōjusuji Temple stands as a timeless testament to Prince Shōtoku’s legacy. It’s a place where history intertwines with spirituality, and tranquility reigns supreme.
