Five hundred and eighteen. That’s how many arhat statues stand within the hallowed halls of Baoguang Temple. This isn’t just any temple. It’s one of the four greatest Buddhist temples in West China a place steeped in history and wonder.

Baoguang Temple in Chengdu stands proudly. Its history stretches back possibly as far as 25-220 AD. Emperor Xizong bestowed its name meaning Temple of Divine Light upon it. Legend says he saw a divine light emanating from the temple during his escape to Sichuan. This wasn’t just a random act. The temple served as his refuge during times of war in 880 AD.

But its story doesn’t end there. Baoguang Temple boasts a stunning layout. Sixteen courtyards five palaces and a magnificent pagoda form a harmonious whole. Imagine strolling along the central axis. You’d pass the Screen Wall the Gate to the Monastery the Hall of Heaven Kings and finally the impressive Dagoba. Each building whispers tales of centuries past.

The Hall of the Arhats is particularly captivating. It houses those 518 statues each around 2 meters high. Their expressions vary. Some are kind some are mischievous. Two stand out wearing imperial robes. Legend says these depict Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. Counting them all is a fun challenge though many find themselves distracted by the intricate details.

Another highlight is the Dagoba. This thirteen-tiered pagoda houses thirteen precious sarira sacred Buddhist relics. It’s more than just a pretty structure. The pagoda’s slightly tilted upper section from a partial collapse and subsequent repairs in the Ming dynasty adds an intriguing touch. It houses a further 140 copper stone and jade Buddha statues. The copper top is believed to be the source of that legendary “divine light”.

The Hall of Seven Buddha another important structure. Beneath it lie two dragon-carved stone foundations the only surviving parts from Emperor Xizong’s era. The Hall of Seven Buddha showcases magnificent statues of various Buddhas each with its own story.

Then there is the Depository of Buddhist Sutras a massive palace containing over 7000 precious sutras. Among them are 43 volumes from Dunhuang. This is a treasure trove of Buddhist teachings passed down through generations.

Baoguang Temple isn’t just a historical site. It’s a living testament to Buddhist culture. It is a place of serenity a place of reflection. A place where history breathes and the whispers of emperors and monks linger in the air. A place I encourage you to explore.
