How about stepping back in time to 1597? Here we are at Sogenji Temple. This temple is a serene escape in Osaka. It has a unique history.
Sogenji Temple is a temple of the Jodo Shinshu Otani school. It is also known as the temple of Akanae Rōshi.
Once, the area around Sogenji Temple was a bustling post town. It thrived as a hub for commerce. Many wholesale shops lined the streets. Today some reminders of that era remain. They evoke a sense of nostalgia.
Originally, the temple’s story began with Hideharu Iwai. He was the son of Hideharu Iwai. Hideharu later became a monk. He took the name Gyokushin. In 1597, Gyokushin built a hermitage.
Later in 1676, the temple officially became Sogenji Temple. It then joined the Jodo Shinshu Otani school.
Do you know about the Akaho Roshi? Okuno Yatafu was one of them. His sister Osayo married a sake brewer. The brewer’s name was Mino Taroemon. Yatafu entrusted his two children to Osayo. They sought refuge at Sogenji Temple.
Inside Sogenji Temple, you can find a monument to Masatane. In the Sogenji Temple cemetery, there are the tombstones of Yatafu and his wife. Also on the grounds is a village shrine. It is called Himori Jizo. People believe it grants wishes within a limited time. The temple’s Sugukushi Inari Shrine features intricate carvings.
Sogenji Temple is also linked to the local community. Taishi kindergarten and a Boy Scout troop are affiliated with it. In June 2022, the main hall underwent woodwork repairs. Roof work commenced later that month.
Each year, Sogenji Temple observes several events. There is the January 10th celebration and the spring and autumn equinox services. Also celebrated are the Flower Festival on May 8th and the Obon Festival on August 14th. The Jizo Bon festival and the Forty-seven Ronin Festival on December 14th are celebrated. On New Year’s Eve, there is a bell-ringing ceremony.
