“Quietly resting amidst the Uji Mausoleum complex lies Uji Mausoleum Number 12 a silent guardian of history. Let’s uncover its story.

Uji Mausoleum is not just one tomb. It is a collection of many tombs and mausoleums. They are scattered across a wide area. This area stretches about 1.8 kilometers north to south. It also spans roughly 0.9 kilometers east to west.

Within Uji Mausoleum’s grounds lie over 300 tombs. These include ancient round burial mounds. There are also keyhole-shaped tombs. These date back to the Kofun period. The mausoleum also holds tombs from the Heian period. These belong to the Northern Fujiwara clan. Some tombs house women who entered the court. Others are for their imperial children.

In 1877 the Imperial Household Agency designated 17 mausoleums and 3 tombs. These became part of the Go-byo or imperial mausolea. Today the Uji Mausoleum includes 37 sites under the agency’s management. Each site has a number from 1 to 37. Number 1 is near the center of Uji Mausoleum.

Interestingly the occupants of these tombs are mostly unknown. It is unclear who rests in each one. Some believe certain figures are buried elsewhere. Despite this Uji Mausoleum Number 12 and its neighbors hold significant value.

Around Uji Mausoleum Number 12 you can find other historical spots. There are the remains of Koryuji Temple. Plus you can explore the other Uji Mausoleums numbered 1 to 37.

The Fujiwara clan played a big role here. A stone monument stands near the entrance to the tomb area. It marks the Fujiwara clan’s burial grounds. The monument lists eight prominent Fujiwara members.

The back of the Fujiwara monument bears an inscription. It mentions the construction of Koryuji Temple in 1005. Fujiwara no Michinaga built it. The inscription suggests the monument used stones from the temple.

Many historical figures have connections to Uji Mausoleum. Fujiwara no Michinaga oversaw the construction of Koryuji Temple. He also managed the graveyard. His daughters became consorts to emperors. This further solidified the Fujiwara clan’s power.

Though the exact identity of the person inside Uji Mausoleum Number 12 remains a mystery. It stands as a testament to Kyoto’s rich history. It also honors the powerful Fujiwara clan. Take a moment to appreciate the stories and secrets held within these ancient grounds. Consider the lives of those who shaped Kyoto’s past.
