Gazing upon Ujigami Shrine, can you sense the weight of centuries resting upon these ancient stones? Ujigami Shrine, also known as Uji no misasagi, isn’t just one tomb. It’s a sprawling complex of over 300 burial mounds scattered across the sacred slopes of Mount Jio and Byodoin. Imagine, emperors, empresses, and members of the powerful Fujiwara clan slumbering beneath these grassy hills. Ujigami Shrine stands as a silent testament to their lives and legacies. It’s a necropolis steeped in history, dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries. The earliest tombs are simple round barrows, while later ones, from the Heian period (794-1185), take on a more elaborate square shape. The Fujiwara clan, who held immense political influence during this time, favored this design. The names of some of those interred here have been lost to time. However, others are well-documented. For instance, Fujiwara no Michinaga, Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu, and Fujiwara no Tokihira, all prominent figures in the Heian court, are believed to be buried here. In 1877, the Ministry of the Interior designated seventeen of the larger mounds as “Kofun,” officially recognizing their historical significance. Later, these tombs, along with others at Ujigami Shrine, were numbered 1 through 37 for preservation and study. While the exact occupants of many tombs remain a mystery, Tomb Number 1 has been identified as the central focus of the entire Ujigami Shrine complex. This highlights its importance within the necropolis. Ujigami Shrine, seamlessly woven into the fabric of Uji, offers a unique glimpse into ancient burial practices and the lives of Japan’s elite. It’s a place where the whispers of the past mingle with the sounds of present-day Uji.
