From the heart of Kyoto, a tale unfolds. A tale of an emperor, caught in the tumultuous currents of change. We stand before the 孝明天皇 後月輪東山陵 英照皇太后 後月輪東北陵 Plaque, a silent witness to the life and times of Emperor Kōmei. This plaque marks not one, but two imperial resting places. Emperor Kōmei, the 121st emperor of Japan, rests here, his reign a bridge between Japan’s secluded past and its rapidly modernizing future. Beside him lies Empress Dowager Eishō, his consort and adoptive mother of Emperor Meiji. The plaque before us, simple yet profound, invites us to step back in time. To 1846, when a young Osahito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne, taking the name Kōmei. He inherited a nation grappling with unprecedented challenges. Commodore Perry’s “Black Ships” had arrived, shattering centuries of isolation and forcing Japan to open its doors to the West. Kōmei, distrustful of foreign influence, opposed these intrusions. His reign was marked by internal strife and the gradual erosion of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s power. He saw unequal treaties signed, treaties that angered him deeply. He even issued an “Order to Expel Barbarians,” a desperate attempt to reclaim Japan’s sovereignty. It was a time of immense pressure, a clash between tradition and the inevitable tide of modernization. Tragically, in 1867, amidst this turmoil, Kōmei succumbed to smallpox at the young age of 35. Some whispered of foul play, but history suggests he was a victim of a global pandemic. His death, however convenient for anti-bakufu forces, marked a turning point. His son, Mutsuhito, would become Emperor Meiji, ushering in an era of unprecedented transformation. Here, at the 孝明天皇 後月輪東山陵 英照皇太后 後月輪東北陵 Plaque, we remember Kōmei. An emperor who stood at the crossroads of history, caught between the past and the future, a poignant figure in Japan’s intricate narrative.
