Gazing up at the Sun Yat-sen Statue, a sense of history washes over you. Right here in Guangzhou, this bronze figure stands as a tribute to a revolutionary figure. The Sun Yat-sen Statue isn’t just a statue. It’s a tangible link to a pivotal moment in China’s transformation. Originally a gift from a Japanese friend, Umezou Meiya, the statue arrived in Guangzhou in 1930. It was first placed at the Sun Yat-sen University stone tablet site. A few years later, in 1933, it was unveiled as part of a school anniversary celebration. The statue moved again in the spring of 1954. The Guangzhou municipal government loaned it to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Its final move, to its current location, occurred on November 12, 1956. This date coincided with the 90th anniversary of Sun Yat-sen’s birth. Look closely at the statue’s base. You’ll see an inscription by Xu Chongqing, former president of Sun Yat-sen University. The inscription details the statue’s journey through time and its significance to the university. The Sun Yat-sen Statue serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of this influential leader.
